Michael Shapcott: Painter

I came across Michael Shapcott’s work online, and was instantly captured by the power of his paintings. He works in a mixture of graphite, oil, and acrylic washes of paint, a combination most artists would be afraid to even tackle. But the way he combines them allows for deep rich color that is off set by delicate lines of graphite.  His work is inspired by tribal cultures as well as the Pre-Raphaelites and more.

Looking through his portfolio felt like looking through a book of fairy tales; set in a cold nomadic climate where people read ruins stones, and commune with animals. The tribal element of his work give it a freedom, and wildness I have rarely seen. The colors are definitely bold, but still delicate and well chosen. I recommend checking out his website and blog, where you can see pieces in progress, as well as video’s of Michael actually painting.

Michael Shapcott (born June 6, 1982 in Hartford, Connecticut) is a Central Connecticut-based painter, known for his daring color palette and emotionally charged portraits. His work deals with highly detailed graphite underdrawings which he then paints with colorful washes in oil and acrylic paints. In addition to painting, Shapcott creates art videos that track the process of painting a painting and show his unique style of working.
